How do I purchase cryptocurrency?

Updated this week

You need cryptocurrency to pay for some of your interactions with the blockchain and to pay for the items you buy. You can buy it through OpenSea using a credit or debit card, you can deposit funds from an exchange like Coinbase, or you can buy it directly in your wallet extension. Let's learn more.

Adding funds using OpenSea

On OpenSea, click your wallet balance in the upper right corner. Next, choose Deposit or Buy.

Method 1: Deposit from an exchange

For many people, it can be easy to find a crypto exchange, like Coinbase, which will offer a way to buy crypto with cash.

Click Deposit within your wallet on OpenSea.

Then, scan or copy your wallet address. Use the wallet address you copied to send crypto from your exchange, following their instructions to send yourself funds. As an example, here is Coinbase's Help Center guide.

Method 2: Buy with a credit or debit card

Depending on your locality, you may be able to buy crypto with a credit or debit card directly using MoonPay. To get started, click Buy within your wallet on OpenSea.

Adding funds through your web3 wallet

Depending on your third-party wallet provider, you may have the option to purchase crypto directly within your wallet.

As an example, here's how you can get started purchasing funds using MetaMask.

1. Click on the Buy/Sell button in your wallet.

2. Follow the prompts on your screen from MetaMask to buy your desired cryptocurrency.

Keep in mind that transactions completed on blockchains require gas fees. To make a purchase using OpenSea, you'll need enough funds to pay for the transaction, along with any associated gas fees.
