In order to buy or sell an NFT with a credit or debit card, you’ll need to live in a region supported by MoonPay and complete an identity verification process through MoonPay. The process is not controlled by OpenSea and OpenSea doesn’t store this data.
There are two ways to kick off the process: either in your profile settings if you’re a buyer or seller, or at checkout if you’re a buyer. The experience will be similar for both and should take a few minutes. Let’s get started!
Initiating MoonPay identity verification in settings
You can follow these steps to initiate verification through MoonPay:
- Navigate to your Profile settings.
- Select Payment settings.
- You’ll see two levels of verification:
- Basic verification: this level of verification allows you to buy or sell up to $7500 worth of NFTs with a credit card and requires you to provide your name, date of birth, and physical address.
- Advanced verification: this level of verification removes the limits when using a credit card to buy or sell NFTs. You’ll need to undergo a more complete verification process, which includes an ID check.
Completing Basic Verification
You’ll need to complete basic verification before you can move to advanced verification. Click the Begin button, and you’ll see a pop-up window prompting you to sign in or register with MoonPay:
If you’re registering for the first time with MoonPay, you’ll be prompted to verify your email address. Once that’s complete, you can begin basic verification, as shown below. MoonPay will ask for your first and last name, date of birth, and country of nationality.
Then, you’ll be asked to enter your residential address.
You’ll briefly see a “Processing” window, and as soon as it’s done, Basic verification will show as Completed in your Payment settings.
Completing Advanced Verification
If you’d like to remove limits on the value of NFTs you can buy or sell with your card, you’ll need to proceed through a more complete verification process with MoonPay.
To kick it off, click the Begin button next to Advanced verification:
You’ll then be asked to provide some information about your income, NFT buying and selling activity, and employment status and funds source.
Then, MoonPay will complete an ID verification. First, select your document country (for example, if you hold a US passport, you’d choose United States) and document type:
You’ll be prompted to scan a QR code with your mobile phone to begin identity verification.
Keep the OpenSea window open in your browser while following the steps to complete the ID verification on your phone. You’ll be prompted to upload an image of your identity document, take a selfie, and finally, provide proof of address.
Once this is complete, both Basic and Advanced verification will show as Completed in your Payment settings.
If you see an error message indicating that your identity couldn’t be verified, please check the MoonPay help center article on common rejection reasons for verification documents or file a ticket with MoonPay Support.
Initiating MoonPay identity verification at checkout
If you’re buying an NFT with a card for the first time, you’ll be prompted to complete the identity verification process when you click Buy now and select Card as the payment method.
From there, you’ll follow the same steps documented above. Depending on the cost of your transaction, you’ll need to complete basic or advanced verification.
