We take allegations of theft seriously at OpenSea. The sale of stolen items, converted items, fraudulently obtained items, items taken without authorization, and other illegally obtained items using OpenSea’s services is prohibited.
This guide explains how we handle stolen items and what steps to take if you own an item that was reported as stolen. If you’re the victim of a theft, please see this help guide for more information.
Items under review
If an item has been reported as stolen by a user but we haven’t yet received a police report, it will be temporarily disabled and feature a yellow alert icon and an "under review for suspicious activity" message on the item page. An item may also be under review if it has suspicious activity in its transaction history.
When we're notified of a potentially stolen item, we temporarily disable the ability to buy, sell, or transfer the item using OpenSea’s services for 7 days.
Items corroborated as stolen
Once we receive a police report corroborating that an item was stolen, we will continue to keep the item disabled and the icon will change to red. The item will remain disabled unless the original owner withdraws their report.
While disabled items cannot be bought, sold or transferred using OpenSea’s services, we do not take custody of NFTs, so items may still be transferred to other wallets on the blockchain using other platforms.
What should I do if an item I own is affected?
If you purchased an item now marked as under review or suspicious, the item will remain in your wallet, but you’ll be unable to buy, sell, or transfer it using OpenSea’s services.
If the original victim of the theft hasn’t submitted a police report after 7 days, we’ll re-enable the item for sale. If they submit a police report at any time, the item will remain disabled. At this point, the item can only be re-enabled in certain circumstances at the request of the original victim of theft.
If your item is displaying a “suspicious activity” or “under review” alert and you believe this item has been flagged incorrectly, please submit a ticket to our User Safety team, selecting My Account → Collection or NFT display issues → My NFT can’t be bought or sold due to suspicious activity. Make sure to include your wallet address and the OpenSea URL for the item.
Why did I receive an email notification about an unusual transfer?
As part of ongoing efforts to keep OpenSea a safe and trusted marketplace, we have systems in place to detect suspicious account activity, including unusual transfers and potential theft. If we detect this activity, we notify you immediately via email in order to verify the activity.

If you received this email, please follow the steps in the email to confirm whether or not your items were stolen by submitting a request through our Help Center. Please understand that actions on the blockchain are irreversible, and OpenSea is unable to revert transactions or retrieve potentially stolen items. But OpenSea can and will prevent buying, selling, and transferring of stolen items using our services.
It’s important to be vigilant about email safety. Please be cautious of phishing emails from addresses trying to impersonate OpenSea. OpenSea emails will never contain links that directly prompt you to sign a wallet transaction. You can always submit a request with us directly at support.opensea.io if you’re unsure of the legitimacy of an email.
