When you mint a new NFT from a Drop or buy a newly minted item, the NFT might display a placeholder image that is identical to other items in the collection. This is called a pre-reveal image.
Why do I see a pre-reveal image?
For creators who decide to delay the reveal of their artwork or the media and metadata associated with their NFTs, setting a pre-reveal image can build excitement for the eventual reveal. Creators might do this for a few reasons, including:
Adding a gamified element to the minting experience. When everyone sees their revealed NFT at the same time, it’s similar to the surprise of opening a pack of trading cards
Ensuring that all users have an equal, randomized chance to mint rarer NFTs. By having a pre-reveal image, the traits associated with the NFT are generally kept hidden, too, so that buyers can’t try minting specific tokens (also called “sniping”) to get more rare NFTs
When will my NFT be revealed?
You can review the creator’s OpenSea collection page, social media site, or website for more information about when the media and metadata for your NFT will be revealed. OpenSea doesn’t set or control this date.
